The Purpose
In the West Village, the entrance to a home is part of the street’s charm. This homeowner wanted a walkway and steps that look as good as the home they lead to, with a graceful, welcoming approach that feels right at home on a historic block. We built the walkway and steps from paving stone, using one material from the sidewalk to the door. The result is a smooth, continuous path that makes the entrance feel finished and inviting. Each step is part of the design, not an afterthought, and the whole approach adds quiet character to the front of the home.
The Challenge
Steps are where a walkway has to work hardest. They need to be safe and comfortable to climb, they need to last through rain and winter weather, and in a neighborhood like the West Village they also need to look right next to the surrounding architecture, in a tight space with little room to spare. We solved this by planning the steps and the walkway together. The height and depth of each step were set for easy, natural climbing, the stone was laid on a firm base to keep everything stable and even, and the finish was chosen to blend with the home. The result is an entrance that is safe, durable, and a good fit for the neighborhood.
what we do
To Build a Walkway and Steps That Welcome and Last, We Planned Every Detail with Care:
- Steps Built for Easy Climbing
Each step is measured and laid for a comfortable, natural rhythm, so going up and down feels smooth and safe.
- One Material from Street to Door
Paving stone carries through the walkway and the steps, giving the entrance a clean, continuous, finished look.
- A Firm Base for Every Season
A well-prepared foundation keeps the stones level and secure through rain, cold, and everyday use.
- Character That Fits the Neighborhood
The style and finish suit the look of a West Village home and its surroundings, adding quiet charm to the entrance.
