The Purpose
In the West Village, the evening starts when the sun goes down and the string lights come on. This homeowner wanted that magic in their own backyard: an outdoor kitchen where the grill is always warm, the table is always set, and good company is never more than a few steps away. We designed the space like a small, private restaurant. A chef’s station anchors one side, an intimate dining area sits just beside it, and the whole setting is wrapped in greenery that feels worlds away from the street. It’s an outdoor kitchen made for slow dinners, long conversations, and nights that don’t want to end.
The Challenge
Creating a full kitchen in a historic neighborhood like the West Village takes finesse. Space is tight, neighbors are close, and the design has to feel at home among the charming brick and character of the surrounding streets, without looking like an add on.We solved this by keeping everything in proportion. The cooking and dining areas were sized to the yard so nothing feels crowded, materials were chosen to suit the neighborhood’s classic look, and layers of plants add warmth and privacy. The result is a kitchen that feels like it has always belonged there, and works beautifully for both quiet dinners and lively gatherings.
what we do
To Meet These Goals, We Implemented a Series of Thoughtful, Practical Solutions:
- A Chef's Station
A built-in grill and prep area gives the cook everything within reach, so cooking feels easy and enjoyable, and the host is still part of the party
- An Intimate Dining Nook
A cozy dining area beside the kitchen puts food and company together, creating a spot that is perfect for dinner for two or a table full of friends.
- Evening Ambiance
Warm, soft lighting turns the yard into a glowing evening retreat, so the space looks as inviting after dark as it does in daylight.
- A Garden BackdropA Garden Backdrop
Layers of greenery and planters frame the kitchen, adding color, softness, and privacy that make the space feel like a secret garden.
