The Purpose
A side yard is long, narrow, and often shaded by the buildings on either side. The patio had to fit a comfortable seating area into a tight width, keep the way through the yard clear, and hold up to Brooklyn rain and cold without needing much care. We planned the patio around the exact size of the space. The surface was laid on a firm, even base, the layout leaves a clear path through, and plant choices were kept simple and hardy. The result is a patio that feels complete in a small footprint and is easy to live with.
