The Purpose
In Brooklyn, some of the best gardens are the ones you have to climb the stairs to find. This homeowner dreamed of a green escape on the rooftop: lush plantings, a comfortable place to sit, and a pergola to tie it all together. We made the pergola the centerpiece of the space. It gives the rooftop height and shape, offers a shaded spot to relax, and sets the stage for the garden around it. With plants in every corner, the rooftop now feels like a private oasis high above the street, ready for quiet mornings and warm evenings with friends.
The Challenge
A rooftop garden has to be planned with care. Everything on it has to suit the building and stand up to sun and open air, and the garden and pergola still had to feel natural together, not like separate additions. We approached it as a single design. The pergola was planned to fit the rooftop and the way it’s used, plants were chosen to thrive in an exposed setting with modest care, and the layout leaves comfortable room to sit and move. The result is a rooftop that feels green, balanced, and comfortable.
what we do
To Turn This Brooklyn Rooftop into a Garden Oasis, We Planned Every Detail with Care:
- A Pergola as the Centerpiece
The pergola anchors the rooftop, giving the space structure, a place to gather, and a finished look.
- Lush Planting Above the Street
Planters and greenery bring color and life to the rooftop, turning a hard surface into a garden.
- Comfort for Long Days
A shaded seating area makes the rooftop pleasant to use through the warm months, from morning coffee to evening drinks.
- Built for Rooftop Living
Materials and plants were chosen to hold up to sun and exposure, so the space stays attractive with modest upkeep.
